INTERVENTION

-

Provide alternative activities to those that appear to cause agitation in participant.*

-

Remove participant from object of agitation.

-

If participant appears to be over-stimulated, move participant to area that is less stimulating.

-

Provide participant with structured, but simple activities.*

-

Encourage and praise appropriate interactions with others when they occur daily.

-

Ensure that participant is not in area which increases agitation.

-

Ensure that participant is placed near (spouse, friend, staff member if possible) daily.

-

Assess triggers of agitated behavior and provide modification of activities if appropriate.* (List modifications, i.e., ensure that participant sits near or within eyesight of favorite person, Provide reassurance that favorite person will return, place participant in area he or she feels most comfortable, Allow participant to wander for ___ minutes per day following ________, have aide/volunteer sit with participant during time of day when he or she is the most agitated, etc.)

Gently redirect attention and provide distraction if participant becomes agitated.

Provide participant with choice of one or two activities in which to be engaged.

Speak to participant in calm and reassuring voice, inquire of participant as to what is creating agitation/discomfort and address issue immediately each time agitation occurs.
